BOURBON RIVER COFFEE TABLE

This is one of a few small tables I made to put in a booth we had at a show. I wanted to do something with bourbon barrel staves since bourbon is all the rave now. I chose to make the river from the charred part of the stave. To compliment the charred river I burned the solid ash base, a method called Shou Sugi Ban. Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese architectural technique that was used to preserve wood by charring the surface with a hot flame.

This table is made from a 3” walnut slab (harvested here on The Art Farm) joined together with a red oak spline that the river is glued and fastened to. The base is cut from a solid piece of ash log, also harvested from The Art Farm. The River is formed from bourbon staves, with a satin polyurethane finish. The top measures 24”x40” and stands 19” tall.
